My Paper Mario 2: the Thousand-Year Door fanart masterpiece is finally done. Thanks to everyone who commented on the earlier versions I posted and gave me the idea to use sketchyness in the final version. I have no doubt that thanks to your comments, this picture is much more interesting than it would have been had I gone with my original plan of doing it all vector-based.
For those who aren't familiar with the game, a very important item is an old, worn-out map to the Star Pieces. I decided to use that as a motif for the picture as a whole, it makes a nice counter to the ultra-smooth vector style of the normal Paper Mario 2 style, and the border helps tie the whole picture together. I realize it's not the standard look, but it's pretty cool this way I'd say, even the sketchy badguys are drawn on-model, and the bottom portion shows that I can replicate the official look if that's my goal. Meanwhile, the sketchy portions show some originality and the transition from vector to pencil sketchy shows some photoshop skills.
If you want to point out that Madame Flurry or Ms. Mowz are missing, it's because I didn't really like them. As for other characters, they probably weren't important enough. Even I have my limits of how much effort I care to put in. I wouldn't have minded sneaking a Kitty Boo in there, but they never did anything remotely important, despite being cute.
Mediums:
Pencil on paper, (actual drawing pencils with different numbers and such for once,) and Adobe Illustrator, combined and adjusted in Photoshop.
This is very cool ^^ I love these types of pictures where is shows the artist thought process. Then you also have finished work as well. Even if its not your style I think its nice to see. You did a perfect job on the coloring and and drawing the characters.

Oh, and I heard you aren't coming for the week? Sorry to hear that, was hoping to actually see you again. :3

I never played any of the Paper Mario games (because I lack the proper consoles-lol- lameness) but I have seen the artwork before and yours is REALLY impressive! I mean, it looks incredibly professional, even as a WIP.
Actually, I think that the transition from sketch to CG makes the "Paper" aspect more dynamic. It would have made an awesome ad with that transition.

Now that you mention it, using the paper transition idea would make for a good image, but it would probably be best done with that idea in mind from the first planning stages. Plus, I'd have to manufacture some better looking "sketches," since by and large, my natural raw sketch results are ugly. They get the job done, but usually don't have the nice kind of sketch look. If I re-traced the original sketches onto a paper with a slight grain though, with a proper drawing pencil, I'd probably get some results that would work well with the idea.
Holy mother! the progress looks beautiful! please tell me you are gonna finish this, the sketched characters in the background looks awesome and dynamic.
